Cable glands for industry and trade

Despite their small and simple design, cable glands are an important component of electrical installations. They are used in nearly all areas of industry and trade.

They allow strain-relieved, water-protected cables to be connected to systems such as junction boxes, distribution boards and switchboards. Cable glands protect electrical components against mechanical and environmental forces such as dust and moisture by connecting the cables securely to casings.

Cable glands consist of three main parts: the cap nut, sealing insert and fitting. So-called EMC inserts may also be used for WISKA cable glands for electromagnetic compatibility. This eliminates the need for special EMC cable glands. Other cable gland designs include ex-cable glands, which are used in hazardous areas, and special hygienic design cable glands, which are used wherever sanitary conditions are necessary (e.g. in the food industry).

Cable glands typically have metric threads that meet global standards. However, standardised steel conduit threads (PG) can also be used. The corresponding glands are called PG cable glands. Unlike in Europe, the standardised, self-sealing NPT thread (national pipe thread) is widely used in the US market. Depending on the application, threadless cable entries may also be used instead of threaded cable glands.

2000 WISKA develops QUIXX®, the first dual-component cable entry in the world.

2007 The world’s first breathable cable gland with pressure equalisation, VentGLAND®, is produced by WISKA.

2010 WISKA develops an innovative membrane cable entry with strain relief (CLIXX®).

Today WISKA offers a comprehensive range of cable glands for various industries including wind and solar energy, transport engineering, shipbuilding, the offshore industry, lighting technology, mechanical and plant engineering and the chemical and food industries.

SPRINT® – the modular cable gland system

The SPRINT® cable gland system by WISKA has a modular design. Its components are completely compatible with one another and offer a solution for virtually any installation. SPRINT® cable glands are available in brass, stainless steel and plastic, and are suitable for use in a wide range of applications and branches.

The comprehensive cable gland range offers metric, PG and NPT threads in various lengths, as well as cable glands that can be used in temperatures down to as low as -60 °C. Custom designs, such as different thread types and special seals, can be made upon request.

Quick and easy installation

SPRINT® cable glands are easy to combine and require only a single, size-dependent installation tool. A 4-in-1 principle means every cable gland has a simple and precise construction: four elements – the cap nut, sealing insert, an optional EMC insert and fittings – gives a SPRINT® cable gland. Whether they’re made of plastic, brass or stainless steel, all cable glands have identical clamping ranges. The comprehensive range of multiple sealing inserts, reduction sealing inserts and special sealing inserts is compatible with all types of material and a wide variety of cable entries. The SPRINT® cable gland system fulfils all requirements for the protection classes IP 68 and IP 69.

Pressure equalisation cable glands – preventing condensation formation

Electrical installations that are subject to major temperature fluctuations and high moisture require a unique solution. WISKA’s innovative pressure equalisation cable gland VentGLAND® contains a semi-permeable ePTFE membrane, which ensures constant pressure equalisation between the inside and outside of the casing.

VentGLAND® allows the casing to breathe. In this way, pressure equalisation cable glands minimise the hazard of condensation formation.

The VentPLUG is used when a cable gland with an additional pressure equalization unit is required to vent the enclosure.

Pressure equalization units from WISKA are now also available in thread sizes M 20 and M 40, in addition to M 12. Both feature a flat, space-saving design to enable flexible usage. Thanks to an improved membrane, the air flow rate of the new VentPLUG in the sizes M 20 and M 40 has more than doubled. The high air flow version even achieves a 2.5 times higher value.

You may also use our venting calculator to compute the optimal application of our pressure equalization products.

Sealing inserts – compatible with SPRINT cable glands

Because of their versatile design, WISKA seals guarantee maximum stability for virtually all cables for a wide variety of applications. The comprehensive WISKA sealing insert range is continually being expanded. It encompasses reduction sealing inserts including special designs for low temperatures, blind sealing inserts, multiple sealing inserts and special sealing inserts for flat cables.

Multiple sealing inserts by WISKA securely fasten cables of various sizes to the cable gland

Membrane cable entries – no counternut or tool needed

As an alternative to cable glands, WISKA also has membrane cable entries in its product portfolio. CLIXX® enables simple cable entry with soft components with strain relief. CLIXX® can be installed without a counternut or a tool: simply click and insert the cable. QUIXX®, a dual component cable entry with thread or click insertion, supplements the membrane range. It enables the insertion of multiple special cables and replaces cable glands for standard installations.

Cable glands with pressure equalisation to the products

Breathable cable glands that work against the formation of condensation

Electrical installations and moisture do not go well together. They lead to power failures in electrical casings, sensors and electrical devices. The danger of short circuits – and thus electrical breakdowns, shortages and disruption of operation – increases wherever there is water. In order to find a solution to this problem, it is necessary to understand how condensation forms.

How does condensation form?

Pressure, temperature and air moisture are constantly changing. Even electrical installations, which must be secured in sealed casings in order to be protected against moisture, are subject to the formation of condensation. The reason: Whether caused by climate or operational conditions, fast fluctuations in temperatures create a disparity in pressure between the inside and outside of the casing. This happens when there is rain, wave impact or entry to a tunnel. Because of the vacuum inside the casing, moist air from outside is sucked in, i.e. through the casing’s seal. Inside the casing, the moist air condenses and causes corrosion or a short circuit.

How does condensation enter the casing?

How does condensation enter the casing?
  1. The casing becomes warm when in use.
  2. There may be a temperature difference between the inside and outside of the casing at night or after being shut off. The temperature difference creates a vacuum which causes air to flow in from the outside.
  3. If the air inside of the casing cools down and pressure equalisation does not occur, condensation will form and become trapped which can cause an electrical breakdown or short circuit.

How does pressure equalisation work?

How does pressure equalisation work?

By using the breathable cable gland VentGLAND® and/or the pressure equalisation plug VentPLUG, the pressure inside of the casing can be adjusted to the surrounding pressure. The casing’s verified protection class is fully guaranteed.

The ideal solution is pressure equalisation

In the past, expensive, high-maintenance electric heating and ventilation systems were installed in order to prevent condensation from forming in the casing. Drip holes in the casings are a less expensive alternative, albeit at the expense of water-tightness and, thus, a high protection rating. The ideal solution is to eradicate the internal and external pressure disparity which causes the formation of condensation. WISKA was the first to develop and produce a water-tight, yet breathable cable gland for pressure equalisation and ventilation.

Why Venting?

Enclosure without pressure equalisation (left) and using VentGLAND® (right) after two years time

Enclosure without pressure equalisation (left) and using VentGLAND® (right) after two years time

Hermetically sealed enclosures are insufficient to protect electrical installations from moisture and contaminants. Fluctuating temperatures and environmental factors, especially during outdoor usage, create pressure inside tightly sealed enclosures. This leads to a build-up of condensation as well as damage to the seal that can result in the penetration of moisture and dirt.

Breathable venting products from WISKA ensure effective pressure equalisation between the interior and exterior. This reduces stress on the seal and maintains the enclosure´s protection classes. Venting products from WISKA therefore help to increase operational safety and extend the service lives of electrical installations. This has a sustaining positive effect on maintenance costs.

The venting membrane

High performance ePTFE membrane used in WISKA venting products

Moisture and dirt are prevented from entering the enclosure. Air molecules are able to penetrate both sides of the membrane.

The high performance ePTFE membrane used in WISKA venting products has billions of breathable pores to enable an effective air exchange between the interior and exterior. The micrometre pores also prevent liquids, dirt and contaminants from passing through the membrane and entering the enclosure.

The membrane is available with different air flow rates. All of them offer all the properties required for the roughest environmental conditions: They are resistant against UV, salt water, oils and grease. Chemicals and aggressive cleaning substances also have no effect on the membrane's structure and performance.

Example: Maintenance of street lighting

In a municipal district, 2,000 street and outdoor lights with an IP 68 protection classification require maintenance every 3 years. If pressure equalisation components are not used in the lighting enclosures, protection classes and lighting performance are reduced. This results in maintenance being required every 1.75 years.¹

2,000 lights IP 68 protection IP 5X protection
Maintenance interval 3 years 1,75 years
Maintenance per year 667 lights 1.143 lights
Maintenance cost per light 20 Euros 20 Euros
Maintenance cost per year 13.340 Euros 22.860 Euros

Conclusion: Without using venting products additional costs of more than 70 percent may arise due to higher maintenance requirements.

Cable glands for the railway industry to the products

Cable glands according to EN 45545 for optimal fire protection

EN 45545 cable glands are equally suitable for all railway vehicles, regardless whether they are passenger carriages, freight cars, locomotives or railcars

EN 45545 cable glands are equally suitable for all railway vehicles, regardless whether they are passenger carriages, freight cars, locomotives or railcars

Since June 2013, products and materials that are used in the railway industry must be tested according to the European fire protection standard DIN EN 45545 in order to fulfil the same quality standards across Europe. This does not just apply to new vehicles; components used to repair railway vehicles must also comply with these standards. The fire protection standard DIN EN 45545 also applies to cable glands that are used in railway transportation technology.

Fire protection standardisation through DIN EN 45545

DIN EN 45545 has unified national fire protection guidelines, such as DIN 5510-2 (Germany), NFF 16-101 to 103 (France) and BS 6853 (Great Britain) to form a European-wide standard. This unifies strict fire protection standards in trains, tunnels and railway stations, because train fires, especially if they occur inside a tunnel, can quickly become a catastrophe. This hazard must be minimised under all circumstances.

Testing fire behaviour

EN 45545 cable glands by WISKA

The accredited testing laboratories Currenta and MPA, tested the materials used in fire protection cable glands according to DIN EN 45545-2 and the fire resistance of fire protection cable glands according to DIN EN 45545-3

The accredited testing laboratories Currenta and MPA, tested the materials used in fire protection cable glands according to DIN EN 45545-2 and the fire resistance of fire protection cable glands according to DIN EN 45545-3

WISKA has developed a railway series for railway transportation technology. It is in compliance with and at times surpasses the quality and safety requirements of the fire protection standard DIN EN 45545. Railway cable glands are an industry-specific extension of the established SPRINT cable gland system. WISKA is one of the first European producers to successfully test a complete cable gland series with brass, polyamide and stainless steel materials according to DIN EN 45545. An EMC version for electromagnetic compatibility completes the range of railway cable glands for railway transportation.

Innovative material for fire protection cable glands by WISKA

EN 45545 cable glands by WISKA ideally combine top product quality and versatile modularity while complying with safety standards. As a part of a comprehensive testing procedure, WISKA tested the fire behaviour of processed and raw materials according to DIN EN 45545-2. WISKA has tested a wide array of materials for interior and exterior use at recognised testing laboratories in order to develop optimal fire protection cable glands. The result: the complete fire protection series fulfils the highest DIN EN 45545-2 hazard level 3 requirements that can be applied to materials used in railway systems.
